Stephen

First Christian Martyr • Early Church

Stephen was one of seven men chosen by the Jerusalem church to assist with the daily distribution to widows. Described as full of faith, grace, power, and the Holy Spirit, he performed signs and spoke boldly. After giving a lengthy defense before the council, Stephen was stoned to death while praying for his killers. Saul, later known as Paul, approved of his execution.
