Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor who presided over Jesus' civil trial. The four Gospels describe Jesus being brought before him by the Jewish leadership. Pilate ultimately released Barabbas and handed Jesus over for crucifixion. He later granted Jesus' body to Joseph of Arimathea.
