Apostle Chosen to Replace Judas • Early Church
Matthias was a disciple who had accompanied Jesus' followers from the baptism of John through the ascension. After the death of Judas Iscariot, Matthias and Joseph Barsabbas were nominated to fill the vacant apostolic position. The disciples prayed and cast lots, and Matthias was numbered with the eleven apostles.
