The Medes were an ancient people from the region of Media in modern-day Iran. They rose to power during the decline of the Assyrian Empire and allied with Babylon to destroy Nineveh in 612 BC. The Medes later formed a major power in the region before their kingdom was absorbed into the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great.
