Abiezrite of Ophrah • Judges
Joash was the father of Gideon and a member of the Abiezrite clan in Ophrah. He initially maintained an altar to Baal, reflecting the widespread idolatry in Israel during the time of the Judges. After Gideon destroyed the altar of Baal and the Asherah pole, the townspeople demanded Gideon’s death. Joash defended his son, challenging them to let Baal contend for himself if he was truly a god. His response protected Gideon and led to Gideon being called Jerubbaal.
