Herod Agrippa I was a Herodian ruler who persecuted members of the early Church. He ordered the execution of James the brother of John and, after seeing that this pleased some of the Jewish leaders, had Peter arrested and imprisoned. Peter was later miraculously freed. Agrippa later received public acclaim at Caesarea and was struck down after accepting praise that belonged to God.
