Roman Commander in Jerusalem • Early Church
Claudius Lysias was the Roman military commander in Jerusalem who intervened when a crowd attacked Paul near the temple. He initially ordered Paul examined by scourging but stopped after learning that Paul was a Roman citizen. Lysias later protected Paul from an assassination plot and sent him under heavy guard to Governor Felix in Caesarea.
